My Two Bits.............
Comcast as the 800lb.Gorrlla in the tech industry.
I think the 800lb. Gorilla in the tech industry right now is Comcast. They are getting their hands into everything right now. They own NBC, and Universal, then there are theme parks, and all the tech that they are developing to put into the pipeline. When I think of the cloud and the pure computing power that the cloud could provide I think of the backbone that Comcast controls that could be used to move all that info and data back and forth to the cloud. Forget Microsoft and Google their software. Comcast is hardware, which means its not a stretch to think of Comcast as some day being a cloud provider. They could easily set up their own data centers to host VM’s. In fact they might use Linux or some other OS to offer cloud based services. They would be a bigger threat for Amazon Web Services if they ventured in that direction. That’s not to mention be in the Cat’s bird seat in offering cloud services, because of where they sit on the pipeline as a major ISP provider. What’s to stop them from coming up with their own notebook or pc that you could connect to their box and boot up their own cloud OS that could compete with Google or Microsoft. Then again they could just as easily partner with either for the software and find a willing partner for the hardware. I’m merely speculating here on my part. I have no idea what so ever, that this in Comcast’s plans’. In my view their still busy integrating NBC into their org. So for them to venture into cloud computing might take a few years, if they decided to get into a new business. But to me the whole idea of a Comcast Cloud venture is not so far fetched, and offers interesting possibilities for the future of both broadband, and cloud providers alike.
(Disclosure; I was neither paid to write this piece nor do I have any affiliations with Comcast or anyone in the cable industry. Furthermore neither my wife or I own any stock in Comcast. Though we own stock in both Microsoft and Google. The opinions I expressed in my Two Bits blog post are my own.)
