The Big Friday Edition of Today's Links and My Two Bits....

Verizon installs Vigilent Energy Management Systems in 24 of its US Data Centers. Verizon’s goal to save money by saving has led Verizon to install the Energy Management Systems. The system made up of sensors in the data centers and monitored by software developed by Vigilent offers suggestions to the optimal working temp in the data center. A side benefit to this energy saving on Verizon’s part is the fact that it will help the environment. To learn more you can read the press release; http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/verizon-significantly-reduces-energy-consumption-at-24-of-its-us-data-centers-123544794.html

“Verizon Serves up Fios A La Carte”
http://blogs.forbes.com/greatspeculations/2011/06/09/verizon-serves-up-fios-a-la-carte-but-its-no-feast-for-vz-stock/

Conspiracy? Verizon iPads2 are being sent back to sender in China. The website 9TO5 MAC has gotten whiff of something strange going on with the iPads2. It seems FedEx is sending them back to the manufacturer in China, at Apple’s request. The strange part is the people at Apple don’t know why Fedex is doing this and they the Apple employee’s seem clueless about any recall. And of coarse FedEx is just doing what the system tells it to do. You can read the story for your selves at ;

Comcast gets into the home security business.
Comcast has announced another service called XFINITY HOME SECURITY SERVICE. The software behind this service is provide to Comcast by iControl Networks. According to the release the new home security service provided by Comcast offers the following features that include an interactive, easy-to-use touch screen security panel, for dual-mode broadband and cellular connectivity to the Central Monitoring Station, video monitoring, lighting control, custom text and email alerts, 24/7 monitoring, thermostat control, remote arm/disarm. You can read the press release at the following link; http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/icontrol-networks-powers-comcasts-xfinity-home-security-service-123536259.html
iControl might want to watch out for Apple computer because of the simple fact that they use i in their name. Apple might sue over trade mark infringement, either that or offer to buy them out so that they can get the name. On Comcast’s part are they going to start offering quad play? A quad range of services for one low monthly fee? Another avenue for them to try and make money out of the cable pipes.

Comcast is sitting on allot of wireless spectrum..
http://www.fiercecable.com/story/comcast-doubly-blessed-wireless-spectrum/2011-06-09?utm_medium=nl&utm_source=internal
My personal feeling is that Comcast will use the spectrum. It has it just has not announced it’s plans yet. Otherwise why would they hire a wireless exec like they did in 2008?

Cisco launches ASr 9000 router upgrade
http://www.fiercecable.com/story/cisco-returns-network-roots-advanced-asr-9000-upgrade/2011-06-08?utm_medium=nl&utm_source=internal
If you look at the press release provided at the end of the article the router does router virtualization. I’ve been screaming for something like this for cable, for the last few months. The upgraded router will help cable operators better handle the flow of traffic on their networks. Here’s another article on the Cisco routers; http://www.cedmagazine.com/News/2011/06/Cisco-ASR-9000-9922-96-Tbps-IPv6-nV-network-virtualization.aspx?et_cid=1645841&et_rid=265117505&linkid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.cedmagazine.com%2fNews%2f2011%2f06%2fCisco-ASR-9000-9922-96-Tbps-IPv6-nV-network-virtualization.aspx

The next piece in the puzzle is security and encryption of say TV shows through VOD. Well it just so happens that a company called Verimatrix has come out with what it call video watermarking. It encrypts compressed video streams. You can read more here; http://www.cedmagazine.com/News/2011/06/StreamMark-Verimatrix-VideoMark-watermarking-server-side-VOD.aspx?et_cid=1645841&et_rid=265117505&linkid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.cedmagazine.com%2fNews%2f2011%2f06%2fStreamMark-Verimatrix-VideoMark-watermarking-server-side-VOD.aspx
